Racing career
The son of 1984 World Rally Champion Stig Blomqvist, racing was part of growing up for Tom. Aged 10, he started racing himself, karting in New Zealand where he spent his younger years. By the age of 15, he’d scooped eight karting championship titles and was looking for the next step.
At that point, Tom moved to Europe to rise through the ranks of single-seaters. One year later, he became the youngest ever Formula Renault UK champion (beating Lewis Hamilton’s previous record) with 12 podium finishes in 20 races.
Moving into Formula 3, Tom’s breakthrough season came in 2014 when he was crowned vice-champion of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, finishing second behind Formula 1 driver, Esteban Ocon, and ahead of current Formula 1 World Champion, Max Verstappen.
In 2015, Tom moved from single seaters to DTM, making history once again as the youngest BMW driver to win a race in his first season – claiming victory at Oschersleben. He stayed with the team for three seasons before moving on to explore the world of Formula E (2017-2021).
Tom’s first FIA World Endurance Championship season was in 2021, coming home second in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and finishing the year as vice-champion in LMP2. In 2022, he won the Rolex 24 at Daytona and the IMSA Dpi Championship – going onto make it a double victory at Daytona the following year.
In 2023, Tom contested the FIA World Endurance Championship with United Autosports, putting the #23 car on pole position in Spa-Francorchamps and Bahrain. In 2024, Tom will embark on his first full IndyCar season.
Tom has shown amazing talent in many different categories, and I'm thrilled to have him onboard at United.
