“I’m really excited about this surprise opportunity to get back to the ELMS” says Albuquerque, “it makes sense … I’m available, it’s good racing, with a good team and good teammates!”
Full-season #21 driver Nelson Piquet Jr is unable to make the Spanish race due to a clashing commitment, so Albuquerque is joining Daniel Schneider and Andy Meyrick for a one-off special. The trio will be looking to build on positive momentum after the #21 ORECA 07 posted a top-five finish in the competitive Pro/Am category at the second round of the season, the 4 Hours of Le Castellet (read more).
“It’s great to have Filipe back in the ELMS paddock” says Max Gregory, United Autosports MD. “He’s such an experienced driver … we’ve worked together for years and celebrated great success along the way. I’m confident we’ll have a good weekend with Filipe, Daniel and Andy in our pursuit of the Pro/Am podium.”
Albuquerque enjoyed unprecedented LMP2 success with United Autosports in the 2020 European Le Mans Series – with four pole positions, three victories and a further two podiums from five races. Indeed, Albuquerque and teammate Phil Hanson never finished a race off the podium throughout the whole 2020 ELMS season.
And while Aragon hasn’t appeared on the ELMS calendar before, Albuquerque is familiar with the track. “Aragon is a place I know very well” he explains “so I hope I can contribute with some knowledge, helping my teammate Daniel [Schneider] to learn … I’m looking forward to it.”
