We are in sunny California with team co-owner Zak Brown, three iconic race cars and a packed schedule of classic car action at Monterey Car Week.
This week kicks off the legendary Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion - hosted at the home of the “Corkscrew”, WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. Zak and the United Autosports historic crew will be running three cars from his personal collection at the world-renowned event which is held every year on the West Coast.
“The Monterey Reunion is one of my favourite events in the calendar,” says Zak, “racing incredible cars with the United Autosports team in my home state of California. This year, I’m taking the Williams FW07, the BMW 320i, which has just had a full rebuild, and the Jaguar XJR-9 – a new addition to my collection. In 2023, I just missed out on the podium in the McLaren M8D … I am ready for another win in Monterey!”
Last week, we packed in some practice laps at the Pre-Reunion – and today, the 2024 edition of the Reunion officially begins with the Williams, BMW and Jaguar raring to get back on track.
The XJR-9 was originally the Jaguar XJR-8 - a six-time podium placer and vice-champion in 1987. For the 1988 season, it was upgraded to the XJR-9 specification, going on to claim a P3 podium finish.
When is the race? Saturday 17th August 15:30 PDT / 23:30 BST
Next up – a familiar name in United’s recent historic racing ventures - the 1980 Williams FW07B, which Alan Jones drove to Formula 1 victory in the 1980 World Championship. In November 2023, Zak just missed out on a podium finish with the Williams at Velocity Invitational at Laguna Seca, claiming P4.
When is the race? Saturday 17th August 14:15 PDT / 22:15 BST
Thirdly, we have the IMSA 1978 BMW 320i Turbo. Chassis 003 is the sole lightweight 320i - an extremely rare and important example of BMW-McLaren’s pivotal IMSA GT race car.
